Part 1. The Power of the Question
I believe we empower ourselves most when we sit before the metaphorical mirror and ask the questions that shine the brightest light on the subject of our lives. Only by shining the light do we become aware of the shadows. But of what use to the self is the question in the absence of the brutally honest answer?
So let me ask you a question that you may not have asked yourself. Forgive me if this stirs in you an uncomfortable response.....
“Do you ever feel sick and tired of where your life is going?”
If the answer is “Yes”, do you not feel you deserve better? Much better?
I do. And I'm sure that you do too.
“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending”. Carl Bard
Everyone holds within them the capacity to become a greater version of themselves. Each and every day. But what if you had just one more day? What would you do differently?
Have you ever considered how much of your life up to this moment you have spent wishing you could be, do or have something that you have not yet felt empowered to make happen?
“Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do, do it now! There are only so many tomorrows.” Pope Paul VI
If up to this point your life has been motivated by anything other than your desire to grow and expand, then you have most likely been driven by your subconscious need to please others.
If your life is driven by your fear of the past, by your fear of the future, when do you intend to set yourself free?
Is it not time to make that decision? In the moments of our decision our destiny is literally set into motion. Decisions made and acted upon over time have the power to greatly enrich our lives, or to cause our lives to shrink, shrivel and die.
So ask yourself the one question that you simply MUST know the answer to.
What do you really want your life to be about?
“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” David Henry Thoreau
Life should be a dynamic continuum of ever-flowing creative change, expansion and progress. Simply stated, should feel good. And it does feel good when a sense of lasting fulfilment and personal happiness are the constant theme.
True happiness comes from making progress in a worthwhile cause, from the step-by-step realisation of our personal vision.
“Where there is no vision the people perish” Voltaire.
Lasting happiness and fulfilment become our daily experience only when we divorce ourselves from the story of our past, from the futile lies that we've been telling ourselves.
To enter into a truly empowered life we have to decide what we “MUST” change rather than what we have told ourselves we “should” change.
Let's be honest, Should = Won't achieve, Must = WILL achieve.
So why don't you make the decision of your life today?
What might your future hold if today you decided to take the very first step along your new life path? The path you know you MUST take.
Decide consciously. Decide deep within yourself. Decide on a simple goal, something that excites you, something you can live and embody each day. Hold yourself to a higher standard than you have ever held before. Realise that you are the captain of your ship. This is your voyage, and it's time to set your ship back on course. No longer can this ship be abandoned on an ocean of uncertainty with no map and no destination. It's time to sail with purpose.
And that purpose is something that only you know. You have something very significant to do and to be.
It's possible that you might die one year from now. You may well die tomorrow. But what truly matters is what you're going to do while you are here. What is your special plan? What is your message to the world? What is your legacy to be?
There is something which distinguishes you as unique from everyone else on this planet, and you've gotta decide what this is.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman.
Knowing with absolute certainty what you came here to do will endow you with the motivation required for a lifetime that is truly yours. Not a template designed by someone else. Knowing what you truly want is what will give you the power to get up early and to stay up late.
This is the key that will connect you with the people that are truly supposed to meet. It will connect you with people on a level that you've never experienced before.
We have one chance at this life. One chance to do what it is that we know we MUST do.
So what are you going do with your time? What are you going to do today? What are you going to do right NOW?
We so often choose our life path out of fear. Fear disguised as security. Fear disguised as practicality. What we truly desire feels impossibly unobtainable. It feels so out of reach that we rarely challenge ourselves to pursue it.
So many of us reach the winter of our lives to realise we could have been so much more. Our self-defeatist attitude often makes us lifelong slaves to bleak and bland conformity.
“The opposite of courage is not cowardice. It's conformity”.
One thing that seems apparent is that it is very easy to fail whilst trying to achieve something you aren't interested in. So you may as well take a shot at doing what you truly love.
“You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take” Wayne Gretsky
